The National U23 football team, the Black Meteors will this evening begin their AFCON campaign against Cameroon at the Cairo International Stadium.
Having failed to qualify for the Olympic games since 2004, head coach Ibrahim Tanko and his charges are poised to end Ghana’s long wait to represent at the world’s leading international sports event.
Ghana will hope for a good start against the 2000 Olympic champions who defeated Chad and Tunisia to earn a place in this year’s tournament.
A top-three finish at the end of the eight-team tournament will book a place in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic games.
Ghana is the first African country to win a football medal at the Olympics [Barcelona 1992] before Nigeria and Cameroon winning Gold at subsequent events.
Both teams are led by former internationals; Rigobet Song for Cameroon and Ibrahim Tanko for the Black Meteors.
Whoever will get the nod to qualify from the group will count on a good result tonight.
The match is scheduled for 8 PM and will be live on GTV and GTV Sports Plus channels.
Meanwhile, Host Egypt and Mali will play the opening match of the tournament which will run from 8th to 22nd November 2019.
