Check out this week’s Game Week updates
Fulham 0-3 Arsenal
Ghana forward Eddie Nketiah could only make a cameo appearance in the first game of the league campaign. He came on for French forward Alexander Lacazette with just four minutes to run on the clock with Arsenal all but secured all three points on the road.
Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton
Three Ghanaian players were in contention to feature in this tie. Black Stars duo Jordan Ayew and Jeffrey Schlupp were handed starts while compatriot Mohammed Salisu could not make the Southampton matchday squad.
It was a dreaded outing for Schlupp who managed just one successful pass for Palace having in the entire 81minutes he last on the pitch. The record is the lowest by any midfielder who has lasted past the 60th-minute mark in the league.
Despite not hitting the back of the net, it was a different scenario for Jordan Ayew especially in the first half after hitting a 100 per cent in the department of his game; passing, take-on and tackle-success. The enterprising forward is looking to emulate his form last season that saw earn the Crystal Palace’s Player of the Year award.
Mohammed Salisu meanwhile will have to wait a few more days to make his premier league debut after failing to make the matchday squad. Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhüttl has maintained that the former Real Valladolid defender wasn’t match ready and will have to hold on a bit for his first game for Southampton.
West Bromwich Albion 0-3 Leicester City
Ghana’s Daniel Amartey was not included in the matchday squad for the trip to the Hawthorns despite a recovery from what has been a recurring injury in the last two years.
Brendan Rodgers at the Foxes pre-match presser said “Dan Amartey has just come back in. He played 45 minutes of the friendly game last weekend. It’s been nearly two years since his last game, so you always have to be careful when a player’s been out for such a long time, but he’s progressing well.
Westham 0-2 Newcastle United
Despite being included in the Newcastle’s squad for the 2020-2021 season, Ghana’s Christian Atsu was notoriously missing for the toons away opener against the Hammers. Following the signing of Ryan Fraser from Bournemouth, the former FC Porto winger has been subject of several rumours linking him with a move away from the club. Saturday’s omission could be yet another indication that Atsu isn’t part of Steve Bruce’s plan for the campaign.
Nothing confirmed as yet but with quite some time left on transfer period, Christian Atsu might consider a move away from the toons in search for more playing time.
Brighton 1-3 Chelsea
Ghana’s Tariq Lamptey was in action for Brighton and Hove on Monday night as they lost 1-3 to Chelsea. The right-back appears to be picking up from where he left off last season, posing lots of trouble for Chelsea’s Alonso.
The 19-year-old put up a Man of the Match (MoTM) contender; 82 touches, winning 7 duels, 5 recoveries, and created 2 chances with one leading to Brighton consolation goal.
