We enter into Week 2 of the Press Sports Ghana EPL Watch where we monitor the performance of Ghanaian footballers in the Top European football league.
Manchester United 1-3 Crystal Palace
Jordan and Jeffery Schlupp were impressive in the game that saw them pull a surprising 3-1 victory despite missing out on some first-team players.
Schlupp was the provider for Andros Townsend who put the visitors upfront after just seven minutes. Jordan Ayew despite being a visible figure in the match missed an opportunity to open his account after failing to score from the penalty spot. But VAR was on hand to save his blushes as Wilfred Zaha took charge of the retake to double Palace’ lead. United pulled one back six minutes later by the Ivorian winger was on hand yet again to restore the visitors two goals lead to end the game 1-3.
Arsenal 2-1 Westham United
When the going gets tough, who are you going to call? This was the mood on social media as Eddie Nketiah struck home a late winner for the host at the Emirates stadium.
With scores tied at 1-1, the young forward was brought on for Alexander Lacazette with 13 minutes to run on the clock. Eddie needed just eight minutes on the pitch to repay the managers faith after tapping in from close range to maintain Arsenal’s 100 per cent record in the league. The striker appears to be caving a name for late-winners having scored against Fiorentina and Bayern during last term’s preseason and on loan at Leeds United.
Newcastle United 0-3 Brighton
It has become interesting clear Ghanaian winger, Christian Atsu has no future with the Magpies after being left out once again when they hosted Brighton at home.
That was certainly not the case for Chelsea youth product Tariq Lamptey who made a switch from the Blues to Brighton at the end of last season. The teenager marked another impressive outing in a tie that saw his side ran riot against Newcastle. He proved a little too much for Allan Saint-Maximin who fouled him in the box which was expertly converted by Maupay for Brighton’s opener. He earned high praise for Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher who couldn’t hide his admiration of the exciting right-back.
Leicester City 4-2 Burnley
Daniel Amartey was missing in the Foxes team that defeated Burnley at the King Power Stadium on Sunday.
The defender came on as a second-half substitute, scoring for Leicester City in a 1-1 game with English Championship side Blackburn. He was expected to make a return to the Foxes team in their second premier league outing but that was not the case. It’s still not clear whether it is a case of injury management by Brendan Rodgers or an indication of an impending exit from side.
Southampton 2-5 Tottenham
It has been a bad start for Southampton to the 2020-2021 English football campaign after losing all three games played so far. Following opening day league defeat to Crystal Palace, the side went on to lose 2-0 in the league cup to Brentford.
On Sunday, the host recorded their 3rd consecutive defeat in throbbing defeat to Tottenham Hotspurs. In all three games, new signing Mohammed Salisu is yet to appear on a team sheet, which question marks hanging over when he’ll mark his debut. Southampton has conceded 8 goals in three making a case for how long highly rated Mohammed Salisu will be thrown in to help salvage the Saints leaking defence.
