Asante Kotoko suffered a huge dent in the chances of making the group stages of the CAF Champions League after losing 1-0 to Al Hilal at the Accra Sports Stadium on Wednesday.

The Porcupine Warriors were hoping to build up on their win over the weekend in Ghana Premier League but it was a disappointing showing from the side who were dominated by the Sudanese counterparts.

An intense first half saw either side failing to find the back of the net, however it was the Sudanese who looked the more threatening side after creating the most goal scoring opportunity.

Kotoko returned from recess hoping to make the home advantage count. Putting together some good strings of passing yet find it difficult to penetrate the organized defense of the Al Hilal who looked quite composed rendering the Kotoko attack blunt.

Coach Johnson Smith responded with some changes after bring on Osman Ibrahim for Godfred Asiamah in a bid to dominate the midfield which appeared out of sort. He followed up with a double change seven minutes later bringing on Naby Keita and Sulley Muniru for Emmanuel Gyamfi and Kwame Opoku.

The substitution could do little for the Ghanaian side as Al Hilal struck home the game’s opener in the 77th minute. Second half substitute Vinny Bongonga finished off Mohammed Quatarra pass inside the penalty box.

With defeat staring in the face, Kotoko took the game to the Sudanese and were present decent opportunities in the box but could not convert any, much to the disappointment of the fans who managed their way to attend the game.

The game finally ended 1-0 in favor of the visitors who will travel back with a huge advantage. Kotoko now face a huge task to overturn a 1-0 defeat in faraway Omdurman.
