Burundi on Thursday became the first African country to resume football following the suspension of various leagues across the continent due to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.
With just three games to conclude the season in the East African country, the Burundi Football Federation took the decision to suspend their league on April 13.
Despite strict guidelines and safety protocols, this afternoon’s game saw hundreds of fans throng to the stadium as Musongati FC drew 3-3 with Athletic Academy in the Burundian Premier league.
The guidelines included temperature tests and hands sanitizing before every match outside the stadiums.
With other African countries still engaged in discussions to resume football activities, today’s news will certainly offer some hope to the various sporting institutions across the continent.
Meanwhile, Burundi recorded one casualty in 42 confirmed cases with 20 having made full recoveries so far.
