Former Bayern Munich player, Samuel Osei Kuffuor has questioned the increased use of Astroturf in the West African country, raising injury concerns among young players.
The former Ghana international and GFA Normalisation Committee (NC) member cautioned against it’s use at the Bundesliga Legend Tours in Accra.
“Now we have astroturf coming to Ghana. Is it good for our football? For me, I think it’s not the best for our kids.”
“How many of them would get injuries in the Achilles, injury problems everywhere because of astroturf?”
He added that the use of artificial turf does have an adverse effect on the development of young players.
“German people have stopped using astroturfs, Europeans have stopped using astroturfs. So, why are we just so much concerned about bringing astroturfs here. It doesn’t help us.
“The technical abilities that the young ones need to train it doesn’t go with the astroturf”, as quoted.
Astroturf use in Europe has seen several discussions in recent times due to the suggested high risk of injuries among professional players.
