The Ghana Football Association has proposed the introduction of spot kicks to decide Ghana Premier League games that end in stalemate.
The proposal by the GFA Executive Council follows Ghana’s worrying trend in missing out on international competition during penalty shootout.
The West African country has lost on penalties in four major tournaments, recently the 2019 U23 AFCON were Ghana lost to Ivory Coast in the semifinals before losing yet again in the 3rd and 4th place game in Egypt.
Per the proposal, games that end in a draw will be decided from the spot where the eventual winner picks up two points with the loser earning a point.
Spokesperson for the GFA, Tamimu Issah confirmed this in an interview with Happy FM.
“The Executive Council will have a further discussion on the decision to have penalty kicks after a draw game. In the coming days, Executive Council will make a decision as to whether it will be immediate and the modalities involve”.
